What is The Tour de France?
The Tour de France is a multi-stage cycling race held in France and nearby countries each year. It’s the oldest and most prestigious of the three Grand Tours, which include the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España.
20 to 23 teams of 8 riders compete in the event, with stages timed. The time each rider Ku999 to complete a stage is compounded, and the rider with the lowest cumulative time is the leader of the race and will wear the famous yellow jersey.
The general classification is the primary contest within the Tour de France, but riders can also win the green jersey for sprint sections and the polka dot jersey for mountain climb sections. There’s also the white jersey, which is available to riders under the age of 26, and the team classification is awarded to teams based on the first three finishers from each team on each stage. The golden jersey is awarded to the most aggressive rider of the previous stage, which is chosen by a jury.
Tour de France History & Past Winners
The race was originally organised in 1903 to drive sales of the newspaper L’Auto, which became L’Equipe, one of France’s most prominent sports newspapers. The very first Tour de France was planned as a 5-stage race starting in Paris and passing through Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, and Nantes. However, a lack of entrants due to its difficulty meant the organisers had to make the course simpler while also reducing the entry fee and increasing the first prize to 12,000 francs. This was around 6 times the average annual salary.
Between 60 and 80 people entered the first race in 1903, although many riders dropped out after the first stage. By the end of the 4th stage, only 24 competitors remained. The eventual winner, Maurice Garin, finished almost 65 hours ahead of the last rider.
Since then, the Tour de France has been held every year, except for periods during the First and Second World Wars. As the Tour became more popular, the course was updated to make it tougher.
Today, the Tour de France consists of 21 day-long stages over a 23 or 24-day period, which covers around 3,500 kilometres. The exact route changes each year, but typically passes through the mountain chains of the Pyrenees and the Alps.
French riders have won the Tour the most, with 21 cyclists winning 36 times, while Belgian riders have 18 wins, and Spanish riders have 12.
Riders with the most Tour de France wins include:
-
Jacques Anquetil (1957, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964)
-
Eddy Merckx (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974)
-
Bernard Hinault (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1985)
-
Miguel Indurain (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995)
-
Chris Froome (2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017)
The winner of the 2024 Tour de France was Tadej Pogačar, marking his third victory in the race. Biniam Girmay won the points classification, Richard Carapaz won the mountains classification and the combativity classification, while Remco Evenepoel won the youth classification. UAE Team Emirates won the team classification at the 2024 Tour de France.

Tour de France 2025 Predictions
The 2025 Tour de France is almost ready to get underway, and already there are several clear favourites to win according to the sportsbooks. The big favourites to win the 2025 Tour matches the podium from last year’s race. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuckStep) are ranked as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd favourites respectively.
Pogačar and Vingegaard have won the last 5 Tours between them, and most experts believe that it will be one of these two who will win once again this year. However, Evenpoel could upset the odds and improve on his performance from 2024.
Favourites & Picks to Win
-
Tadej Pogačar – As the defending champion, Pogačar is currently the top favourite to win the 2025 Tour, and his performances at other cycling races this year, including at the Critérium du Dauphiné, show that he’s more than capable. Another Tour de France win would put him level with Chris Froome for the most Tour GC wins of all time.
-
Jonas Vingegaard – As the winner of the 2022 and 2023 Tours, Vingegaard is Pogačar’s biggest rival. Last year, he finished in second place, but he was still on the mend from a serious injury, and he could be back to his best this summer. He could certainly close this gap this year, especially with help from his Visma-Lease a Bike teammates.
-
Remco Evenepoel – Evenepoel finished third in his debut Tour in 2024 while also winning the young rider classification. He excels in the time trial, but his performances over mountain stages have been his biggest weakness in recent races. Still, he has the potential to upset the two front-runners if he can continue to improve.
